Why Laos needs your help

Why Laos needs your help

Despite recent economic development, over a quarter of the population of Laos lives in poverty and nearly three quarters of its people suffer daily hardship.

Half of under fives are malnourished and many rural villages do not have safe drinking water, health care or adequate schooling. Most rural families still make their living from subsistence farming and fishing.

LEOT started its work nearly ten years ago providing scholarships for students from these families. We continue to help students that are sixteen and over as there is simply no other NGO helping them.

What LEOT Does

What LEOT Does

As we approach our 10th Birthday it’s good to report that we are growing and helping many disadvantaged people. The LEOT School is our largest activity and teaches English and Computer Studies to 220 students from poor families.

Our Scholarship programme started in 2006 and has helped over 70 students achieve their dream of further education in Laos colleges or Universities. Most become teachers; we also number a Dentist and an Air Traffic controller in our graduates. We now aim to help at least 20 students each year.

A Student's Story

A Student's Story

Xaille is a really determined young man and a very hard working student from a Hmong family. The story of his early life is typical of so many of our students.

He was born in the Countryside to a farming family with a small rice field. Life was very basic as they had very little money and their home had no electricity or running water.

When Xaille first came to the LEOT School he was lucky enough to have found a place at the local High School in Luang Prabang and lived in his small space in the school dormitory.
